Safety Check Questions for the Car Test

The Examiner is going to ask you 2 questions before you get into your car for your practical test. Get the answer wrong or you don't know will result in a minor fault. If you get both questions wrong you will still only receive on minor fault. You are allowed 15 minor faults on your test and you will still pass.

Tyres

Question;

Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the tyre pressure should be checked?

Answer;

The cars hand book in glove box, use pressure gauge, check and adjust pressure when tyres cold.

Question;

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road?

Answer;

No cuts or bulges and a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm across the middle three quarters of the tyre.

Lights

Question;

Show me how you would check the direction indicators are working?

Answer;

Use hazard warning switch, then check around car to insure all indicator lights flashing

Question;

 Show me how headlights and taillights are working?

Answer;

Turn lights on and walk around vehicle to check.

Question;

Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working?

Answer;

Use reflection against a window or something reflective, ask someone to check for you.

Controls

Question;

Show me how you would check the horn is working?

Answer;

Check by pressing the button on the steering wheel.

Question;

Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear?

Answer;

Demonstrate by applying the hand brake that showing that when fully applied it secures itself and is not at the end of its working travel.

Question;

Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey

Answer;

By applying pressure on the brake you should be able to feel the resistance of the brakes and should not feel spongy or slack.

Question;

Tell me how you would check the power steering is working before setting off?

Answer;

When the engine is on the steering should feel light and easy to turn.

Under Bonnet

Question;

Identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil and where to top it up?

Answer;

Identify dipstick, explain that you should wipe stick with cloth, place back in and take out again look for max/min, check when engine cool/warm and show where the oil cap is to fill up with more oil if needed.

Question;  

Identify where you would check the engine coolent level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level?

Answer;

Identify max/min levels on expansion bottle.

Question;

Identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic fluid.

Answer;

Identify max/min marks on side of bottle.

Question;

Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the level

Answer;

Identify reservoir and explain that you can see the level against the side of the bottle
